GE Dryer Making Noise: Troubleshooting Guide For Homeowners

A GE dryer making noise during a cycle is one of the most common calls we get at Dryer Repair. Sometimes it’s a coin stuck in the drum seam. Sometimes it’s a roller that has worn flat after years of use. This guide walks through the sounds a GE dryer makes, what usually causes each one, and where a homeowner should stop and call for GE dryer repair instead of taking the back panel off themselves.

Common GE dryer noises and their causes

GE dryer noise tends to fall into four types: squeaking, grinding, thumping, and rattling. Each points to a different part.

Squeaking noise

A squeak usually comes from the drum support rollers or the idler pulley. The felt or bearing surface on these parts wears down over 8 to 10 years of regular use, and the drum starts rubbing on bare metal. On most GE models, the rollers are mounted on the rear bulkhead behind the drum.

Grinding noise

Grinding means metal is touching metal. This is often the drum bearing at the back of the tub, or a roller wheel that has developed a flat spot on one side. A GE dryer left running with a grinding bearing will eventually wear through the felt seal around the drum opening, and that seal costs more to replace than the bearing does.

Thumping noise

A thump that repeats once per drum rotation is usually a shoe, a belt buckle, or a wet towel bunching up and hitting the drum wall. If the thump continues with the drum empty, check the rear rollers and the drum glide for uneven wear.

Rattling or scraping noise

Rattling can be a loose screw on the blower housing, a bent blower wheel, or lint packed between the drum and the front bulkhead. A scraping sound that matches the drum’s rotation speed usually means a roller has gone flat or the support arm has slipped out of its bracket.

How to troubleshoot a noisy GE dryer

Run the dryer empty for about a minute and note where the sound is loudest: front, back, top, or under the base.

  • Open the door and rotate the drum by hand. It should turn without grinding or resistance.
  • Pull the lint trap and check the vent hose for buildup. A blocked vent makes the motor work harder and can produce a low hum separate from the mechanical noise.
  • Look along the inside seam of the drum for anything metal that may have worked its way in, such as a zipper pull or coin.
  • If the drum stops turning, the dryer gives off a burning smell, or it overheats, unplug it and stop the inspection. That’s a job for a technician.

Easy DIY fixes

A few checks are worth doing before booking a repair.

  • Clean the lint trap after every load.
  • Vacuum the vent duct once or twice a year, more often if you dry towels or pet bedding regularly.
  • Check the screws on the back panel and tighten any that have loosened from vibration.
  • Remove and clean the drum rollers if lint has built up around the axles. Dry lint alone can cause a squeak that goes away once it’s cleared.
  • Check that the dryer is level. A base that rocks even slightly can rattle during the spin cycle.

When to call a professional

Call Dryer Repair if the noise continues after cleaning and tightening, or if it’s a grinding or thumping sound tied to a worn part.

  • Replacing a drum roller, idler pulley, or bearing means removing the front or rear panel. Doing this without the right tools can damage the wiring harness or the heating element.
  • Dryer Repair technicians in Toronto identify which part is causing the noise and replace it with the correct part for that model number.
  • On a gas GE dryer, there’s a gas line connection near the burner assembly. That work should be left to someone trained to handle it.
