Dryer Repair

Why Is My Whirlpool Dryer Not Spinning?

Drum’s not turning. You hit start, maybe the motor hums, maybe you get nothing, and the clothes come out just as wet as they went in. This is one of the calls we get a lot for dryer repair in Toronto, more than you’d think actually. Before jumping to “it’s broken, replace the whole thing,” it helps to know what actually makes the drum spin in the first place, because most of the time it’s one small part, not the whole machine.

How a Whirlpool dryer spins the drum

A single motor, connected to the drum by a long rubber belt, that’s basically the whole system on most Whirlpool dryer models. Belt wraps around a pulley setup and around the drum, and an idler pulley keeps everything under tension. You press start, motor spins, belt turns, drum rotates. Break any one link in that chain and the drum stops, even while the rest of the dryer keeps running like normal.

Whirlpool Dryer Not Spinning

Common reasons a Whirlpool dryer not spinning

Broken or worn drive belt

Most common thing we run into on dryer repair calls, by a wide margin. The belt’s thin rubber and it just wears thin over years of heat and friction until it gives out. Usually you’ll hear a loud thump right before it goes. After that the motor might keep humming along, air still blowing, but the drum just sits there.

Worn rollers or glides

Rollers hold the drum up from underneath. Glides run along the front to cut friction. Both wear down with age, and you’ll hear it coming, a squeal or scraping noise that gets worse over weeks until eventually the drum seizes completely.

Idler pulley gave out

Keeps tension on the belt, that’s its whole job. Wheel wears out, or the spring loses tension, and the belt slips off track. No tension, no spin, simple as that.

Motor’s failing

Doesn’t happen as often as belt issues but it does happen, especially in older units. Sometimes it hums without turning anything. Sometimes it won’t even attempt to start. Honestly this one’s best left to an actual Whirlpool dryer repair tech since testing the motor means checking electrical continuity, not something to guess your way through.

Door switch acting up

A faulty switch and the dryer thinks the door’s open even when it’s shut. Won’t spin, safety feature kicking in. Good news, this fix is usually simpler than a belt or motor job.

Thermal fuse blown

Cuts power as a safety measure against overheating. Depending on the model, this can knock out drum rotation too.

Figuring out which one it is

A few things help narrow it down. Motor running but drum not moving? Check the belt. Grinding, squeaking sounds? Rollers or glides, probably. Dryer won’t even start, no motor sound at all? Look at the door switch or thermal fuse before assuming it’s the motor. And here’s a decent test, unplug the dryer and spin the drum by hand. Turns freely on its own but won’t spin when running? That’s a belt or pulley problem, not something mechanically jammed.

Is Whirlpool dryer repair a DIY job

Swapping a belt or idler pulley, doable if you’re comfortable with tools. You’ll need to take the cabinet apart though and work around the motor housing, which isn’t nothing. Whirlpool dryer models differ enough in layout that a repair video made for one model can send you down the wrong path on a different one.

Electrical stuff is another story entirely. Motor, door switch, thermal fuse, get any of that wrong and you’re risking fire hazards or damage to other parts. Warranty’s still active on your unit? DIY work can void that too. For this kind of repair, calling in a professional dryer repair service just makes more sense.

What a technician actually checks

It usually starts with pulling the dryer away from the wall, removing a panel. From there it’s checking the belt for cracks or breaks, testing motor continuity, checking pulley tension, looking over rollers and glides for wear. Most dryer repair visits wrap up in under an hour once the bad part gets identified, assuming the part’s in stock and doesn’t need ordering.

Worth mentioning, waiting too long makes things worse. Dryer running on a slipping belt or worn rollers puts extra strain on the motor. What starts as a cheap belt fix can turn into a full motor replacement if it sits too long without attention.
